lucy hewittCongratulations to one of our exceptional team members, Lucy Hewitt, who recently earned her degree in psychology from Elon University – summa cum laude!

Lucy joined Town N Country Animal Hospital during college, originally applying for a receptionist role after seeing a post from Dr. King on the Elon parents’ Facebook page. During the interview, her passion, intelligence, and curiosity stood out so much that we invited her to join the team to train as a veterinary nurse instead. That was the beginning of something special.

Working first as a drop-off nurse, Lucy quickly became a vital part of Town N Country. Her first job was gathering patient histories, communicating with clients, supporting diagnostics, and (her favorite!) helping with fear-free practices. Most importantly, she brought compassion and care to every patient and person she encountered. Now, she flexes between drop-off and appointment nursing, always willing to step into whatever role is needed.

Lucy has always had a heart for animals; she was the kid rescuing bugs from the pool. Her deep empathy and love for learning made veterinary medicine a natural fit, even if it wasn’t where she originally thought she’d land. She started out thinking she’d study biology and become a physician. But as she studied psychology, she became captivated by how people think and feel.

She’s especially passionate about the intersection of veterinary care and mental health. Inspired by her undergraduate research on compassion fatigue and the high rates of burnout and suicide in the veterinary field, Lucy plans to pursue a master’s in social work with the goal of becoming a veterinary social worker.

If you’re wondering what a veterinary social worker is, Lucy is glad you asked! A veterinary social worker supports the emotional well-being of both pet owners and veterinary staff, offering guidance through loss, difficult decisions, and end-of-life care. Lucy hopes to support clients through grief, educate about animal abuse and neglect, and champion healthy team culture for veterinary professionals.

Lucy says that one of the most meaningful moments at TNC came early in her time here, when a dog she helped care for during a drop-off appointment was later diagnosed with cancer. She remembered feeling like something was “off.” That dog returned months later, cancer-free after treatment. “I loved the way we celebrated!”

That’s who Lucy is. She’s someone who walks through the hard parts and celebrates the victories. She doesn’t just care for pets, she cares deeply for the people who love them and the team that works alongside her. Lucy values and uplifts her team every day, a reflection of our core value “TNC Values Team.

Outside the hospital, Lucy is an avid traveler and lifelong learner. She’s studied in Costa Rica, explored New Zealand, and dreams of seeing more of the world.

We are so proud of Lucy, and are excited for all that lies ahead for her. Her graduation is just the beginning. We’re honored to be part of her journey.
