Shawn O'ParkaEvery year, we recognize a team member whose growth, dedication, and heart shine bright – like a star. This year, we’re proud to honor Shawn O’Parka as our Rising Star Award recipient, a well‑deserved recognition for someone who has quickly become an essential part of both our Gurney Street and Forestdale campuses.

Shawn joined TNC just seven months ago, stepping into a role that blends nursing responsibilities with hands‑on veterinary technician work. Though he’s worked in the animal industry for nearly a decade, including grooming, boarding, and daycare, this has been his first opportunity to dive deeply into the medical side of veterinary care. It’s a transition he’s enthusiastically embraced.

Before coming to TNC, Shawn spent time at the front desk in previous hospitals, always curious about what happened beyond the exam room door. When he arrived here and was given the chance to train as a nurse, something clicked. He describes that moment as the point when he realized he was truly finding his stride.

Shawn’s passion for animals runs wide, but he has a special love for exotics, and loves working with them alongside Dr. Hicks. At home, he shares life with Bea, his three‑year‑old Victorian bulldog, and a turtle named Tortimer.

Originally from Florida, Shawn moved to North Carolina to be closer to family and for a change of pace. He’s found exactly what he hoped for here: a slower rhythm without losing the sense of community and activity he enjoys. And at TNC, he’s found something even more meaningful. He’s found a team that feels like home.

One of the things that stands out most to Shawn is how much he’s learned from his coworkers. The veterinary technicians have taken him under their wing, teaching him vaccines, bloodwork, and countless hands‑on skills. He describes the team as the closest‑knit, most positive group he’s ever worked with.

Of course, veterinary medicine comes with its surprises. When asked what people might not expect about his job, Shawn laughs and mentions the sheer amount of bodily fluids involved. One of his memorable moments was holding a puppy for vaccines, only to have it pee all over him. It’s all part of the job, and he takes it in stride.

Receiving the Rising Star Award means a great deal to Shawn. After moving states, stepping into a new role, and challenging himself to grow, this recognition feels like validation that he’s on the right path. He’s proud of the work he’s doing. He especially loves communicating with and educating clients.

Shawn’s excitement about veterinary medicine is contagious. His journey is still just beginning, but his dedication, curiosity, and heart already have made a lasting impact. We’re honored to have him on our team and eager to see where his passion for veterinary medicine takes him next.

Congratulations, Shawn – our Rising Star.
