Dogs are notorious for eating just about anything. We’ve found all sorts of things in tummies – pieces of plastic, buttons, socks, underwear, hair ties, doll heads, string, more socks, other things that you wouldn’t want to know about, and even more socks. We once got 8 socks out of a dog. Yes at one time.
No exception to this rule is Baylee, an eleven year old lab. Her family brought her in for an urgent care visit because she was lethargic and vomiting. We immediately did blood work, which showed dehydrations, but no significant changes otherwise that would hint at any chronic condition.
So we did radiographs, and the x-rays showed that there was something inside that wasn’t supposed to be there. When there is a foreign body in the belly, we recommend exploratory surgery. Dr. Bolynn performed the operation, and found matted hair and 6 – 8″ of cloth.
No one is sure what the cloth was originally, and Baylee hasn’t told us. She has, however, made a full recovery and is doing well!
Our urgent care handles cases like Baylee’s – non life threatening emergencies that need to be addressed quickly. Vomiting, diarrhea, minor wounds, snake bites, insect stings, and ear infections are among the maladies that urgent care treats. If you’re in doubt, call us! The receptionist will guide you on how to proceed.
We’re so happy that Baylee’s parents brought her to us in time to find out the problem. Had the foreign bodies stayed inside, the consequences could have been dire.
