It’s a fact of life – as joints age they often develop Osteoarthritis (OA). This is true for humans, and it’s true for dogs, too. It probably won’t surprise you that 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years are affected by OA. What may surprise you is that up to 40% of dogs between 8 months and 4 years are also affected.
There are three things that happen with OA:
•Loss of cartilage, which is that smooth, cushioning tissue that keeps bones from rubbing together.
•Loss of the synovial fluid that lubricates joints. This fluid is made by the synovial membrane, a thin protective lining inside the joint, and when that membrane becomes irritated, it •produces less healthy fluid.
•Loss of water content in the cartilage itself, making the cartilage thinner, drier, and less resilient.
The encouraging news is that early detection makes an OA diagnosis highly manageable. We have a new drug to help make that management more effective for your dog. It’s called Arthramid®, and it’s injected right into the joint to bring back some of the lost mobility and flexibility.
