When the leaves fall, sometimes the allergies fall right in behind them. For both dogs and cats, ear infections are one of the most common complications of allergies. The beautiful colors of fall harbor things like leaf mold, ragweed, and dust mites. These can irritate the skin and ears, leading to discomfort that you might not notice until symptoms become severe.
Pets breathe these allergens, but they also collect them on their fur, paws, and skin. For sensitive animals, this can lead to itching, inflammation, and secondary infections.
How Allergies Lead to Ear Infections. The ear canal is lined with super sensitive skin. Allergens trigger inflammation, and the ear becomes warm, moist, and irritated. That’s the ideal environment for yeast and bacteria to grow. Dogs with floppy ears (like Labs, Goldens, and Cocker Spaniels) and cats with allergies are especially prone to fall flare‑ups.

Watch for these common symptoms:
- Scratching, licking, or chewing, especially paws, belly, or sides
- Scratching at the ears
- Head shaking or tilting
- Rubbing the face on carpet or furniture
- Cats pawing at their ears or hiding more than usual
- Sneezing or watery eyes
- Red, flaky, or irritated skin
- Recurrent “hot spots”
- Increased shedding or dull coat
- Redness or swelling inside the ear
- Brown, yellow, or black discharge
- Odor coming from the ears
- Sensitivity when ears are touched
If you notice any of these signs, your pet likely needs to come in. Ear infections rarely resolve on their own and can become painful quickly.
How You Can Help at Home. While medical treatment is often needed, these habits can help leaf 🙂 ear problems behind:
- Wipe paws and fur after outdoor time
- Keep bedding washed weekly in hot water
- Vacuum frequently to reduce indoor allergens
- Change air filters more often during fall
- Keep ears dry after baths or outdoor play
Important: These steps help minimize exposure but they won’t replace treatment if an infection is already present.
