At Town N Country Veterinary Hospital, we have the privilege of caring for pets of every shape, size, and personality. Some patients leave a particularly deep imprint on our hearts. Baby Betty Blue is one of them.

Betty is a one‑year‑old rat with a big personality and an even bigger spirit. Known affectionately as “The Great Adventure Rat,” she is a beloved companion whose zest for life is unmistakable. Despite her small size, Betty has faced more medical challenges than many pets ever will. She lives with a chronic upper respiratory virus that has caused lung scarring and requires ongoing management, including treatments with her own tiny nebulizer. Through it all, she has remained joyful, curious, and deeply bonded to her owner.

In early February, Betty’s family discovered a rapidly growing lump near her left ear. The mass doubled in size overnight and began causing her discomfort. Understandably worried, her owner sought help and began searching for someone who could offer Betty a real chance at recovery.

After days of uncertainty and growing concern, an email arrived that changed everything: Dr. Hicks reached out with compassion, clarity, and a willingness to help. She invited Betty in for an evaluation and expressed confidence that surgery might be possible.

When Betty arrived at Town N Country on February 24th, the mass had grown and was affecting her quality of life. After a thorough exam and discussion, Betty’s family and Dr. Hicks agreed that surgery offered the best hope for giving her more comfortable, adventuring, and happy days.betty

The surgery was complex. The mass extended around delicate structures, including major blood vessels. But after three anxious hours, Dr. Hicks emerged with a smile. She believed she had successfully removed the entire tumor, even the portions wrapped near the carotid artery. Betty had come through the procedure beautifully.

Within a week, Betty was fully healed, back to exploring, and no longer needed medication. Her transformation was remarkable. Her family described her as bright, energetic, and once again ready for adventure.

Stories like Betty’s remind us why we do what we do. Dr. Hicks’ dedication, skill, and compassion made all the difference for a tiny patient with a huge heart. We are proud to have veterinarians who provide exceptional medicine to all, no matter how small the patient.

Betty Blue’s recovery is a testament to expert veterinary medicine, a devoted pet owner, and the extraordinary bond between people and their pets. We are honored to have played a part in her story.

At Town N Country, every patient matters. Every story matters. Whether your pet is furry, feathered, or whiskered or scaled, if it needs care, our team is here to help, exceeding expectations along the way.
