You may have seen recent news stories about New World screwworm, a type of fly whose larvae can invade open wounds in animals. While this is a serious disease where it occurs, the risk to pets in North Carolina remains very low.Here’s what we want our clients to know:
✓ Continue your pet’s year-round parasite prevention. We continue to recommend Simparica Trio because it provides outstanding protection against heartworms, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites; the parasites your pet is much more likely to encounter here in North Carolina.
✓Check your pet regularly for cuts, wounds, or sores, especially after spending time outdoors.
✓ Seek veterinary care promptly if you notice a wound that isn’t healing, has an unusual odor, drainage, swelling, or if you ever see maggots or larvae.
Some medications in the same drug class as Simparica Trio (the isoxazolines) have demonstrated activity against New World screwworm larvae. We’re closely following updates from the USDA, FDA, and veterinary infectious disease experts. As new science becomes available, we’ll continue to provide recommendations based on the best available evidence.
